Dermaplaning
WHAT IS DERMAPLANING?
The name Dermaplaning comes from planing away. Dermaplaning is a cosmetic treatment in which dead skin cells and peach fuzz/vellus hair are scraped off the skin with a sterile medical grade scalpel blade by a skin professional. This treatment is a physical exfoliant. This skin treatment will leave your skin looking smoother, brighter, and more evenly textured.
WHO IS DERMAPLANING FOR?
Dermaplaning is for the removal of dead skin cells and peach fuzz/vellus hair. This can be a prep treatment for special events so that make up sits smoothly on the skin or just to have a smoother, brighter complexion without the soft hairs on the skin.
DERMAPLANING VS SHAVING?
Dermaplaning differs from shaving because of the tool used and how it is used. Shaving blunts the hair while Dermaplaning gently scrapes it away at a 45 degree angle using a sterile medical grade scalpel. The tool and technique used removes the hair without blunting it whereas shaving blunts the hair so it comes back course.
DO IT AT HOME DERMAPLANING KITS?
The Dermaplaning devices from chemists are like a razor and are hard to use. A skin professional will use a more advanced tool which is a sterile medical grade scalpel (like what’s used in operations). The professional tool is used at a 45 degree angle so you’re less likely to scratch the skin, it won’t blunt the hair and you’re less likely to irritate the skin.
The professional tool is able to remove more layers of skin than an at home kit giving a faster, better result. The at home Dermaplaning tool generally fails to provide all the amazing benefits of a professional treatment especially when performed with a simple guarded blade/tool.
A more professional tool, the specific technique used and the use of professional only products are the differences to doing it at home with a home device vs an in salon treatment.

DO WE GO OVER HORMONAL HAIR?
We typically don’t go over hormonal hair unless you already get it waxed. No studies say Dermaplaning stimulates hormonal hair but we typically avoid it.
WHO CAN GET DERMAPLANING?
Anyone with unwanted hair on the face or a build up of dead skin cells can get Dermaplaning.
Someone who wants their make up to apply really smoothly, evenly and flawlessly will love this treatment.
If you are currently shaving your face or waxing it often, this treatment will be a game changer.
Dermaplaning is popular for melanin rich skins with darker facial hair. Clients with melanin rich skin tones should pre treat their skin two weeks prior with brightening products to reduce the risk of PIH (Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation)
HOW OFTEN CAN YOU GET DERMAPLANING?
Dermaplaning is most often performed every four weeks or when the hair grows back.
CAN YOU COMBINE DERMAPLANING WITH OTHER FACIAL TREATMENTS?
Yes, you can do a facial combined with a Dermaplaning treatment even with a chemical peel, a peeling facial treatment or even a skin needling treatment but it will feel more intense and we use calming, soothing products. The skin looks radiant and glowing after a facial + Dermaplaning combination treatment.
AFTERCARE:
Following the aftercare instructions will help you get the best results from your treatment.
Sunscreen- It’s important to use sunscreen after Dermaplaning as your skin will be more sensitive to the sun’s rays. Choose a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher and apply it every day, even if you’re just spending time indoors.
No Exfoliating for 5-7 days.
Simplify your skincare routine- For 2 weeks, stick to a simple skincare routine of hydration and sunscreen. Use a gentle cleanser, hydrating serum or face oil, and sunscreen every day. Avoid any other treatments or products that could irritate the skin.
Minimise other active products for 2-3 days- Avoid harsh skincare products such as retinoids or glycolic acids, these can irritate the skin after Dermaplaning. If you use these products, wait at least a day or two before using them again after your treatment.
Use more moisturiser than usual- Keep your skin hydrated, Dermaplaning can leave your skin feeling a bit dry and sensitive. To combat this, apply a hydrating serum or face oil to help nourish and protect the skin.
Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated- Drinking plenty of water helps to keep your skin hydrated from the inside out. This is especially important after Dermaplaning as your skin will be more prone to dryness.
No intense exercise for 24 hours.
No touching your skin- Touching your face can introduce bacteria to the skin and cause irritation. Avoid touching your face as much as possible after Dermaplaning. Picking or scratching your face can damage the skin and lead to infection so it’s important to resist the urge to pick or scratch at any dryness, redness, or irritation you may experience after Dermaplaning.
No makeup for 12 hours- Avoid wearing makeup for at least 12 hours after Dermaplaning. This will give your skin time to heal and recover from the treatment.
Avoid using hot water on your face for 12 hours.
Avoid steam rooms and saunas.
Avoid direct sun exposure for 48 hours.
Use a clean pillow case for the following 2 nights.
Avoid chlorine and swimming pools for 24 hours- Chlorinated water can dry out and irritate the skin so it’s best to avoid swimming in pools or other bodies of chlorinated water for at least 24 hours after Dermaplaning. You can shower normally after your treatment.
